Mathematics is an exciting and enjoyable subject which is essential for our everyday lives.

It is a logical and beautiful subject in its own right and also helps us to make sense of the world and gives us the tools to change it. From a basic level of numeracy needed for buying food or clothes, to being the language used from quantum mechanics to planetary orbits, Maths is everywhere!

Maths is a subject of ‘doing’ rather than ‘knowing’: while practising it we develop skills in problem-solving, reasoning, logic, and self-discipline. These attributes are all immensely useful in a wide variety of careers. At Enfield Grammar School we hope that we will encourage and help our students not only to learn more about the wonders of Mathematics but also to gain competence and confidence in everyday life and the future workplace.

Key Stage 3

We offer a varied and engaging programme of study in Maths for boys in years 7 to 8, which consists of Core Units. The students are taught in mixed ability groups and we follow an Inquiry method of teaching alongside teaching mathematical skills. Inquiry Maths is a model of teaching that encourages students to regulate their own activity while exploring a mathematical statement or diagram (called a prompt). Inquiries involve the class in questioning, conjecturing, generalising and proving and, when required, in listening to the teacher’s explanation. In Inquiry Maths, students learn to take responsibility for directing the lesson with the teacher acting as the arbiter of legitimate mathematical knowledge and activity. These reflect the skills and knowledge described in the National Curriculum.

Key Stage 5 - 6th Form

We offer A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics.

A Level Mathematicsi s an interesting and challenging course which extends the methods studied at GCSE and includes applications of mathematics – Statistics and Mechanics.

Statistics – Collecting and analysing data and using this to make predictions about future events. Many subjects make use of statistical information and techniques. An understanding of probability and risk is important in careers like insurance, medicine, engineering and the sciences.
Mechanics – Modelling and analysing the physical world around us, including the study of forces and motion. Mechanics is particular useful to students studying physics and engineering.

A Level Further Mathematics is a separate A Level that is usually taken in addition to taking A Level Mathematics.
